There are general principles related to time management. That being said, time management is a personal thing. What I mean by that is that what works for one person might not work for the next person. Try out these tips and see which ones work for you.

Minimize distractions.

Close your door and turn off your phone. Close all tabs on your desktop that aren’t related to the task you’re working on. Turn off all browser notifications. It is much easier to get work done promptly if you can fully concentrate on what you’re doing.

Have a place for everything.

One way people lose time is by looking for things. If you have a set place for your wallet and keys, for example, you won’t waste time looking for them when you’re trying to get out the door in the morning.

Evaluate your behavior — and change it if necessary.

If your morning coffee break often turns into a 30-minute gab session with a coworker, consider setting a timer on your watch to let you know when 10 minutes have elapsed and that it’s time to get back to work.

Plan less, do more.

Go ahead, set goals, plan to achieve them, and then get to work. Don’t spend hours planning, thinking, or worrying about tasks you still have to complete. Thinking about your work won’t get it done.

Avoid procrastinating.

I have often avoided a task for various reasons: I thought it would take a long time, I wasn’t in the mood to do it, or I simply did not want to do it. Invariably, the task was more manageable when I finally got to it, and it took much less time than I anticipated. Often, thinking and worrying about the job takes more time than actually doing it.

Take breaks.

This can seem counterintuitive, but taking breaks throughout your day will improve your focus, concentration, and productivity.
