Are You Too Stubborn to be Proactive?

When it comes to procrastinating, there are a lot of reasons people put things off. Surprisingly, one of them is being stubborn, hot-headed, or thinking tasks are beneath them. If you find you often avoid tasks because you think you shouldn’t have to mess with them, or you find yourself getting angry at the thought of them, this could be the post for you.

Defiant Procrastination

Defiant procrastinators tend to put things off out of resentment towards the task or the person assigning it. If you imagine a moody and defiant teen you get the picture. The avoidance is more about the feelings the task brings up than the task itself.

Defiant procrastinators may have had (or currently have) controlling people in their lives who have tasked them to do things they felt unable to say no to. This creates a sensitivity and resistance to doing things that feel forced. If the subconscious reaction goes unchecked it can morph into rebellion, even when the task isn’t a big deal.

You may be a defiant procrastinator if:

  • You feel indignant when assigned a menial task
  • You resist tasks with anger rather than avoidance
  • You are often at odds with other people over tasks
