Circle of Friends

Do you have a large circle of friends? I really don’t.

I have one person that I knew when I was very young that I still communicate with. I have a handful of friends from middle school and high school, and I have a few friends that I made as an adult.

My girlfriends that I consider close — ones that I have known for many years and would call in crisis, are few. And, unfortunately for me, except for one who lives in my town, they’re scattered all over the place. One is in Ohio. One is in Georgia. Two are in Florida. I have another small group of friends that I feel very close to, and although I haven’t known them as long, we bonded very quickly over a shared love for Disney and shared experiences (running isn’t for the weak!).

I do have bonus “family” friends too — my brothers were smart enough to choose exceptional women to marry, and I consider my sisters-in-law friends, and myself very lucky to have them. But they are far away too, so I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like.

I am thankful for the internet and texting, because it allows me to keep these relationships going without a lot of effort. I chat with each of them in one form or another weekly (or close to it). Even if it’s just to comment on an Instagram comment or post on Facebook, I take the time, because I think it’s important to keep these relationships.

I used to be envious of people who had a large circle of friends. But I have realized that for me, smaller is better. I feel like I have just the right amount right now.

Do you have a large circle of friends? How often do you communicate with them? And how? Send an email to lisa@lisasealey.com and let me know.
