Delegation and Control

Are you a control freak when it comes to projects?

Do you try to do everything yourself, even though you have a team that is completely capable of doing the work? Do you feel like you can do the job better yourself? Do you think you can do the work quicker than the time it would take to explain it to someone else? Do you feel like you have to redo work that others have completed?

If you answered yes to any (or all) of these questions, you might be a control freak.

Don’t worry. There’s hope.

Here are some things to consider and some techniques to put into practice:

1. If you think you can do the work better yourself, take some time and consider your options. Someone else may not do the job the same way you would, but that doesn’t mean they won’t do an adequate job. Sometimes, people on your team will be eager to do a great job and only need your encouragement. Give them a chance.

2. Some additional training for your team might be needed. Investing your time in short-term training now will serve you well in the future, as your staff will be better prepared to handle the next project you delegate — and you’ll feel better about their tackling it since you trained them.
