Exercising, Training, and my Mental State

I mentioned in my newsletter last week that I had decided to sign up to do some races next Spring. Specifically, I am going to do a 5k, a 10k, and a 10-miler, all within 4 days. There is a break between the 5k and the 10k because the 5k is a nighttime race and the 10k starts at 5am. The 10k and 10-miler are on back-to-back days.

Why am I doing this?

Well, I joke around and say that it’s because I’m insane. But the reality is that I have not exercised consistently (I have exercised) since before Covid. And, here’s something I never thought I’d say in a million years: I miss it.

And there’s another thing.

I’m overweight and out of shape. And I have been for quite some time.

It’s unhealthy, I don’t like it, and I’m tired of it. I have been making other changes in my life recently, and that gave me the courage to decide that I am going to be the person who finally slays that dragon and takes control of her health — once and for all. No one else can do it for me. No one else can motivate me. It has to be me.

It was hard for me when my gym shut down. Exercising outside is not really an option for me from March to November because of the heat. Even at 5am it’s in the 90s during the summer. Then, when the gym reopened, they required masks for everyone…
