An American Musical

In case you didn’t know, I’m a HUGE Broadway musical fan. I’ve loved music and musical theater as long as I can remember. I was fortunate to see my first Broadway musical when I was 12. It was a production of Barnum, starring Jim Dale and Glenn Close.

Hamilton is a musical that took Broadway by storm in 2015.

From Wikipedia:

Hamilton is a musical with music, lyrics, and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda that tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow, the show’s music draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes; the show also casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Through this use of modern storytelling methods, Hamilton has been described as being about “America then, as told by America now.”

When it opened, I was not in a position to fly off to New York to see it live, so I did the next-best thing: I bought the original cast soundtrack.

It blew me away.

For months, it was all I listened to. And needless to say, I wanted to see it live. Unfortunately, the tour of Hamilton has not yet made it to where I live. I was resigned to not being able to see it for years. But then, last year, it was time for my son to go on a school trip to Washington, D.C. and New York. The kids had a choice of seeing a few shows — and Hamilton was one of them.
