How did that happen?

New moms hear it all the time from other moms with older kids: “Treasure this time. It goes so fast.” But when you’re dealing with sleep deprivation and spending every minute making sure your baby is thriving, you’re not thinking about that.

And then, in the blink of an eye, comes preschool and elementary school. And even though you are sad to see him go that first day — and you wait anxiously until it’s time to pick him up — you slowly get used to him being gone all day. Then begins the seemingly-endless ebb and flow of the school year. Early release days. Late start days. Stay-home-sick days. Teacher conferences. Performances. Holidays. Breaks (fall, winter, spring). And then the readjustment of having him home all day again during the summer.

Then you do it all again the next year. And the next.

Somewhere along the way you start to realize that time is passing too quickly. You feel like you don’t have enough time. That you haven’t done enough for him or with him.

But you do your best.

You plan birthday parties. You volunteer as room mom; team mom; Scout mom. You plan outings to the zoo and to the movies and to the children’s museum. You get tickets to touring Broadway shows to expose him to the theater. You plan family trips because you want him to have experiences…
