My Love Of Road Trips
--
Road trips. Do you love them or hate them?
I love them.
I grew up in Florida. There are things to do all over the state, and we went to most of them. We drove every time. Of course, my most favorite road trip of all was always to Walt Disney World. But it was more than that. Being in the car, driving anywhere, equaled freedom to me. It was getting away from your life, even if it was only for a day or a weekend. It was exciting.
I’ve taken a lot of road trips. For the most part, I still love them, although now the 4-day or longer trips are getting harder. My kid is in school and we can’t take off for an extended period of time like we used to be able to when he was little. Because of that, in the past few years, we had started flying more often than driving, and I didn’t think much about it.
Because of Covid-19, we had to cancel a couple of short trips that we’d planned in late March and early June. Recently, we contemplated taking a road trip to visit some family this summer. I was surprised at how excited I got at the prospect of it. Unfortunately, we had to cancel that too.
I’m glad, though, that we even talked about it. It reminded me how much I miss taking road trips. I think it’s time to plan some short ones. Once it’s safe to travel again.
