Today I want to talk about impostor syndrome again. I talked about what it is and how it can show up a little while ago. Now I have some tips to help you overcome it.

Recognize the feeling.

Are you suddenly plagued with self-doubt? It could be that you’re dealing with a bout of impostor syndrome. Instead of listening to your inner critic, realize what is happening and choose to move on.

Ask yourself if what you’re feeling helps you.

For example, if you’re feeling like a fraud, does feeling that way help you? Or does it make things more complicated? Once you realize that buying into impostor syndrome does not help you, it can be easier to overcome those feelings and move forward.

Change your thinking.

If you think you don’t deserve success, try giving yourself permission to enjoy your success and own your accomplishments. After all, it wasn’t just luck or help from others that got you where you are. They may have helped, for sure, but it was YOU that put in the hard work. Pat yourself on the back for doing such a great job.

Choose to learn from your mistakes.

Mistakes happen — to everyone. I make them all the time. But instead of focusing on how I think I screwed up, I choose to figure out what went wrong and how to change things to keep it from happening again. Learn to accept that it’s normal to make mistakes. You’re not perfect. And that’s ok.

Seek out support when you need it.

Sometimes we need to talk to someone else to get out of our heads. Find a friend, coach, or mentor, and share your doubts and feelings. They can help you realize how well you’re doing.

Impostor syndrome can be a beast. It can make you feel undeserving, not good enough, or that you don’t belong. Don’t believe it. You are exactly where you need to be and doing exactly what you’re supposed to do.

I believe in you.
