Productivity is important to me. I’m all about working smarter, not harder. Here are some things to know and some tips about productivity and how to become more productive.

1. Multitasking is a fallacy. It is simply not possible to concentrate fully on several tasks at a time. Sure, you can get them done, but you run the risk of making mistakes or missing things. When you’re going to do work, whether it’s course work, work for your job, or work for your family, concentrate on one task at a time.

2. Turn off all notifications. Desktop, laptop, phone, email, Facebook, Twitter, and whatever else you have that notifies you of an incoming communication. Of course, if you’re using the time block method and you are working within your social media or email time blocks, notifications are ok. Otherwise, shut them off. Completely. The only thing that should be able to get through are emergency calls from your family.

3. Figure out what works for YOU and your schedule. Some people are very detail-oriented and are able to closely follow an intricate plan to the letter. Others are more effective when they see the bigger picture first and then figure out the small steps that lead to the final goal. Whatever your personality, strengths, and weaknesses are, develop a plan that works within those parameters. There…
