Planning a trip can be daunting, especially if you don’t use a travel agent. I have been planning my trips for the past several years, but I occasionally rely on a travel agent if I’m going somewhere unfamiliar.

If you’re going to do it yourself, the first rule of successful trip planning is to start early. Yes, it is possible to plan a last-minute trip, but you will pay much more for your airfare and hotel or Air B & B if you wait. You also run the risk of not being able to get the flights you prefer or your preferred accommodations being completely booked.

If you plan to travel for Thanksgiving or the winter holidays this fall, now is the time to begin researching your airline tickets, rental cars, and accommodations. Also, don’t forget to request time off if you haven’t already done so.

Let’s start with the airlines. First, you need to decide which one you want to fly with. Obviously, if you have a favorite or are a frequent flyer with a particular airline, you should start there. But sometimes, other airlines will have better flight times for your particular schedule, and sometimes, they will be cheaper. Take the time to do your research, and you can save time and money.
