Last week I talked about creating a system for dealing with your everyday paperwork, and I mentioned having backup systems in place. Today I wanted to expand on that and talk about ways to organize your computer files.

As you know, it is a good idea to regularly back up your important content in the event that your computer crashes.

First, let’s talk about flash drives. These are also sometimes called thumb drives. They are small and plug into your computer’s USB port.

Imagine how terrible it would be if you had been working on a project for work or a research paper if you’re a student and suddenly everything is gone. If you invest in a flash drive, you can begin saving documents and projects directly to it, and that way, if your computer crashes, the data is safe on the flash drive and not on your computer’s hard drive.

An added bonus is that flash drives are portable. If you eject them properly, you can take them everywhere you go and plug them into another computer or laptop.

Next up are external hard drives.

External hard drives are a great way to store large amounts of content, such as music, videos, and pictures. You can also have one that is exclusively for backing up the contents of your computer, so that you have a…
