Podcast Episode 44 — Preserving Your Recipes
Today I’m going to talk about how to get your recipes organized and preserved.
First, go gather all of your recipes and cookbooks.
You know, all those pages discreetly torn out of magazines while waiting at the doctor’s office; the quickly scribbled notes at the office pot luck; the pre-printed recipe cards from that cookie exchange you attended 4 years ago — grab them all. Sit down and sort through them. If there is only one recipe you like in an entire book, make a copy of it and donate the book. No sense in having it take up space.
Take this time to call your mom, your grandma, and your best friend’s cousin. Ask them to send you your favorite recipes. Do it now before the recipe is lost or forgotten.
Now put everything in a notebook or book.
If you’re going to use a notebook, I’d suggest a 3-ring binder with plastic sleeves to protect the recipes. Another bonus to this system is that you can pull out the sheet you need when you’re cooking and not have to keep the entire book out — plus, the plastic sleeve will protect the recipe from any spills or messes. If you have a handwritten recipe from your grandmother that is fading or falling apart and you want to keep it intact, a good idea is to take a photograph of it and put the photograph in the notebook.
