Podcast Episode 49 — My #1 Tip to Help Deal With Family Stress During the Holidays

I am very fortunate that I do not have family drama to deal with during the holidays, but I know that there are many people who aren’t that lucky. November and December are certainly the months that have the potential to produce the most stress. Even if you don’t have family drama, simply having others in your home can be enough to send your stress level soaring.

Here is my #1 tip to help you deal with family stress:

Take a break.

I don’t mean for hours. Although, if that’s an option, and you need it, and you’re able to, go for it.

What I mean is that you’re allowed to take some time — alone — to recharge your batteries and clear your head. Here are some ideas for things you can do:

  1. Go for a quick walk around the block. The fresh air and physical activity will help you to calm down.
  2. Go into your bedroom, shut the door, and read a book for a few minutes. Sometimes the quiet is all you need.
  3. Wash your face. It’s refreshing, and it’s something small that you can do for yourself without feeling guilty, because there is usually a lot of guilt associated with self-care.
