Decluttering and organizing your home is a big task that can also be extremely overwhelming.

If you have looked around and figured out that there are A LOT more things to do than you thought, my best advice for you is to start small. Here are some tips to get control of your home’s chaos right now.

  1. Do a trash sweep. Go through every room in your home and throw out any trash that didn’t make it into the trash bin. This is a quick, immediate-gratification activity that can also motivate you to move on to the next easy task.
  2. Make piles. Seriously. Gather similar items and make piles. This makes it easier to put them back where they belong. For example, pile any papers together. You can then go through the pile and figure out what to throw out, shred, recycle, or keep. You can do the same for clothing that’s scattered around the house. Figure out what needs to be laundered or put away, and take those items to the appropriate place. Making and disposing of piles will reduce your clutter immediately.
  3. Pick one place. If looking at your entire living room gives you anxiety, start with one small space. Pick a bookshelf or a corner where clutter accumulates. Remove any trash or things that don’t belong, and clean and organize what’s left…
