Traits Common with Chronic Procrastinators

As I’ve already mentioned, procrastination is an avoidance behavior. Reluctance to address tasks in a timely way is generally tied to a false belief or thought that causes a delay in taking action.

Since procrastination is usually tied to avoidance, there are some common traits that trigger the behavior, such as:

· Low self-esteem

· Fear of rejection or abandonment

· Harsh inner dialogue

· Difficulty with change

· Easily frustrated

· Rebellious against authority

· Poor concentration skills

· Prefer instant gratification

Let’s look at each of these.

Low self-esteem: Having low self-esteem can cause people to avoid risk or feel incompetent, even when they’re not. This can impact their ability to make decisions and take action.

Fear of rejection or abandonment: If you have been rejected or abandoned in the past, the fear of it happening again can be tremendous. And if you’re fearful of being judged or criticized it can be just as intimidating.
