Valentine’s Day

Do you celebrate it? Do you love it? Hate it?

When I was younger, and I’m talking about high-school and college age, I looked forward to it. There was an excitement about it. An anticipation. Will I get asked out? Will I get flowers / candy / a card / a gift?? Will this be the start of a relationship? Will this be the “getting serious” point of a relationship?

Now that I’m older, and have been married for many years, I mostly forget about Valentine’s Day. It seemed much more important when I was single. I’m not sure that I see the point of having my husband spend a fortune on flowers or a gift for me when he shows me on a regular basis that he loves me and that I’m important. For me, and I’m sure I’m in the minority here, it doesn’t make sense to restrict expressing your love or affection to one day a year just because Hallmark and the jewelry stores tell you to.

Maybe I’m cynical.

Then again, maybe I’ve become so accepting of and comfortable with myself that I don’t need a one-day-a-year acknowledgement that I’m loved.

Let me put it another way: I’d much rather have my husband surprise me with an unexpected gift / dinner / card at a random point in the year simply because he felt like doing it rather than on February 14th because it’s “expected”.

That seems much more romantic to me.
