Writing and Life

I have a funny story. Well, maybe not funny, but insightful.

I love to write. I usually write one or two (and sometimes three) articles per week for this blog, and I also write a weekly tip that I also use as the basis for my weekly podcast episode.

A while ago, I started to feel the pressure of producing. I want to create relevant, helpful content, but having a regular writing “schedule” is sometimes a creativity killer. I mentioned in another article that I’d rather give you one great piece than 5 crappy ones, so I cut down on my writing.

Then the funny thing happened. After a while, I missed writing as much as I had been. I felt the urge to sit down at the keyboard and let loose with the words and phrases. Put another way, as soon as I took the pressure off, it became easy again.

And I wondered where else I was doing the same thing in my life — putting pressure on myself to produce when there really wasn’t a reason for it. Sure, deadlines are a good thing, but I thought I might be making things harder on myself than was necessary.

Holy cow.

After taking a good hard look at things, well, let’s just say that awareness is the key to change. And boy, am I aware now.

This is going to be fun.
